The symptoms associated with Visual Stress whilst reading include:
- Movement of print (especially black on white text) or blurring of print
- Glare from the page
- Headaches whilst reading
- Difficulty keeping place and finding next line of print to read
- General discomfort whilst reading
After a full eye examination our qualified optometrist, who specialises in reading difficulties, carries out a coloured filter assessment.
Firstly an assessment with coloured overlays is performed, whereby patients can compare a variety of different coloured filters placed over a passage of text to assess the effects. Sometimes these effects are quite magical as they can stop print moving about, make text appear bigger or have a calming/comforting appearance of the text. If a particular colour is preferred, we dispense a coloured overlay sheet for the patient to use at school/college/work and home for a few weeks. After a trial if the coloured overlay is beneficial we advise a follow-up visit to assess and dispense precision tinted spectacles.
This second assessment is performed using an intuitive colorimeter instrument. Every individual's colour preference will be different and the colorimeter is used to determine the most effective colour or colour combinations required for the patients precision tinted spectacles. These spectacles can be used to improve seeing text on a white board, text on a computer screen and reading print.
We have found many children and adults have benefited from precision tinted spectacles. It has also been found to be effective in treating photosensitive migraine.
